Maybe this post should have been titled, “My Sister is Awesome.”
About a year ago, I got my sister a present. I’m usually not good at buying presents, but with the help of Eric Robinson (who you might remember from this GDC video I took) I was able to purchase one of the Japan-only giant half-meter-tall Mr. Saturn plushies.
See, my sister and I are both huge fans of the MOTHER series of games, in particular MOTHER 2, which I played upon its American release as EarthBound in the summer of 1995. Mr. Saturn is one of the most memorable characters from MOTHER 2 and 3. If you’d like to read some good stuff about EarthBound, just today Michel McBride-Charpentier posted a compilation of critical analysis of EB over at Critical Distance.
Anyway, I felt smug. She loved the gift. I’d finally made up for years and years of her getting me cool stuff and me getting her like a CD or something. Hell, I might have even been ahead. Then… she made me this for this past Christmas.
It’s a giant framed poster that she designed and drew herself. It’s got the four main characters from EarthBound, plus the Sky Runner, Exit Mouse, Bubble Monkey, Tessie, and even Buzz Buzz! And of course, Mr. Saturn at the center of it all. I also love the ominous Starmen in the background.
So basically I have the best sister ever. Also the worst sister ever! She’s planning on following this up with a MOTHER 3 poster! What the hell am I going to get her next time I need to give her a gift????
If you would like a print of this, see my sister’s comment below!

That is so awesome! I am quite envious. Both of the Earthbound goods, and of your excellent luck in sibling assignment. :)
I understand it would kind of devalue yours, but she REALLY should run prints of that.
It would sell like PK Hotcakes
Yes. Because clearly there will be no legal issues with me selling the poster. But I very much appreciate the sentiment.
Not saying there wouldn’t be a potential legal issue, but considering all the merchandise for sale from the folks at Starmen.net (who I don’t believe have had any legal issues) and the apparent lack of interest on Nintendo’s part in enforcing any rights to Earthbound/Mother (see: Mother 3 translation/hack) I think you could get away with it.
More than actually a revenue idea, I did just want to express that I (and probably many others) would love to own that poster. Great work!
If you were to sell them, only one out of every 128 posters should have Poo’s sword.
=)
You’re lucky to have such an awesome sister. But you’re unlucky because you’ll never be able to top her gift :D
I’m going to print this pic and frame it on my wall, seriously.
If you’re that serious about printing it, why not get an actual poster from me? I am looking into getting it out there for fans. Let me know if you’re interested. roxanna.kazemi@gmail.com
I didn’t know you were looking to get them out there. Definitely interested!
Haha. You might want to email me, since I don’t have your contact info =P
I had one all written up, but something distracted me form hitting the send button :S
I would definitely love to purchase a copy of this awesome poster.
