At Austin GDC this September, the estimable Larry Mellon and I will be delivering a two-person rant titled “Wake Up and Smell the Metrics! A Rant on Metrics-Driven Development in Online Games.”
We’ll be covering business intelligence metrics, gameplay metrics, production metrics, all sorts of great things. My angle (and I’m pretty sure Larry shares the same view) is that if we’re going to be serious about treating games as services more than as goods, we need to get serious about metrics in every way.
It should be a fun session, too: Larry is a great presenter, and I’m no slouch either. We had a wonderful hour-long phone call just ranting at each other about this kind of stuff so I think there will be plenty of material for the actual talk!!
Not quite sure what day of the conference it’ll be held on, but signs point to September 15. No time slots have yet been allotted.
And of course, if you’re going to be at AGDC, please let me know!

Someday, somehow, I will be able to attend all these fancy conventions and meet all these fancy people and know all this fancy stuff.
Speaking of conferences, I went to Gamefest today and met one of your employees. I recognized the name Orbus Gameworks on his badge and slowly put two and two together (five!).
To top it all off, the first presentation I went to was all about user research, metrics, and tracking, so it gave me a little better understanding of how beneficial it is to product development.
I’m going to AGDC too. This time with a whole new set of business cards! :)
It will be a little strange giving the Pirates Post-Partum talk when I’m no longer at FLS, but oh well. I guess I’ll make do.
I would be thrilled to see this presentation, but classes start up for me in early September.
I’ve seen the “Breaking into the Industry” speech you gave on two separate occasions, one was GDX(Savannah):2006
the other was an quick version you gave to one of Brenda’s classes in spring at SCAD.
so I’m curious, if your coming to GDX in Savannah this year, could you give a talk/presentation on Metrics? I’ve been really intrested to know about it since seeing your talks at SCAD.
Wish I could go but GDC is at the same time as the start of my semester. That’s some bad luck, huh?
