Corporate Networking Feedback

I got some excellent feedback on my First Few Months post, especially from David, Will Jennings, Joe Ludwig, and Ian Schrieber. (The latter three are all experienced game industry pros. David might be, but I know a few a Daves, so I can’t really say.)

Here are the basic points they covered, although you should read them in their entirety. If you think I’m going to expand most of these out into articles of their own… you are correct.

  • be respectful (no talking on your cell, excessive breaks, etc)
  • show up on time, even a little early
  • be self-motivated. when you finish a task, ask for more work
  • find out what your real job is
  • establish a feedback loop with your supervisor
  • look for mentors anywhere in the company you can
  • learn everyone’s name (taking notes helps)
  • be on the lookout for problems you can solve, and solve them
  • step up and take responsibility for tasks that nobody “owns”
  • don’t be afraid to ask for favors
