Call Me a Skeptic

So there’s a trailer of LucasArts’ use of Pixelux’s DMM (Digital Molecular Matter) technology floating around the internet. Having watched the video, I just have to say that it seems like a pretty obvious pre-rendered hack to me. Particularly, the scene starting at 0:30 and going until the end of the video just looks seven kinds of fake.

Of course, LucasArts never claimed it was footage from a real game. Furthermore, I’m not enough of an art/tech guy to know if DMM scales from pre-rendered cinema to live gameplay. But still, I can’t look at the footage without a big voice in my head saying “Yeah, right.” I want to believe, but I can’t, ya know?

The reason the last half looks (and is) fake is simple:

The animation is too fluid, and the aim is too pristine. It carries none of the forced animation that gameplay requires, and none of the “look straight at the target” that gameplay uses to point force powers.

The early half looks about right, though.
