XBox 360 Snarkery

So someone brought their XBox 360 to work yesterday. As I was watching someone play through Perfect Dark Zero, I watched the bad guys… stand in place and fire the gun at the player! My only comment was, “Wow. This console is amazing. For a second there, I thought I was looking at a real mannequin.”

Why does anyone still care about graphics over much more interesting computational problems like AI?

Inertia.

At least his works: a lot of people are having serious problems.

Over hyperrealism in character models may be symptomatic of the same pathology that gave us overly gratitious violence and anatomically impossible female characters. I had an exchange with Micheal Mateas in Oregon last june on this topic, and he noted that the complexity of creating cognitive behavior on par with current graphics is much greater than that of rendering technology. Shadow of the Colossus presents a nice solution in the meantime, and stands as a nice constrast to the X360 line-up.

A recent blog entry of mine recounts a brave dungeon crawl through a mainstream retail location, involving this very issue: http://kingludic.blogspot.com/2005/11/best-bought.html

Its a shameless plug, I know.
